SVT in children


Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a very common dysrhythmia in children and demands a specific approach. In accordance with the most recent guidelines, this interactive algorithm guides a solver through the acute management of SVT treatment based on condition urgency. Additionally, it offers an insight into long-term therapy for the avoidance of SVT episodes.
In our multimedia, we will tell you the story from a completely different perspective, because we take care of a child. We wanted to feel the perception of the world through the eyes of our little ones, who do not see the world in black and white, but much more colorful, more vivid and with a speck of magic in their pocket. Review

Supraventricular tachycardia is the most common arrhythmia diagnosed in childhood. Main symptoms include a feeling of accelerated heartbeat or palpitation, but also dizziness may occur, headache, chest pain, sence of pressure in the throat, shortness of breath and/or fainting. If the episode lasts for many hours, it can result in heart failure. Although generally we can say that children are capable of tolerating very fast heart rate for many hours without showing any symptoms of the disease. Therefore, we have enough time for diagnosis and therapy, such as vagal maneuvers.
Interactive algorithm of diagnosis and therapy of supraventricular tachycardia comprehensibly and pragmatically presents the management of the disease in various ways and educatively focuses on practical skills of administering intravenous antiarrhythmic therapy and electrical cardioversion. I must greatly praise the quality of the algorithm, which meets the goals of calm, prudent and accurate diagnosis and presents an intelligible management pathway.

1. The student can recognize a critically ill patient with a diagnosis of SVT.
2. The student is able to recognize a circulatory stable/unstable patient and act accordingly.
3. The student knows how to treat a pediatric patient with SVT.

Key points

1. It can be challenging to distinguish SVT from sinus tachycardia in pediatric patients.
2. In acute compensated circulatory failure, we can use vagal manoeuvres and administer adenosine.
3. In acute decompensated circulatory failure, we proceed with immediate cardioversion.
