Hypothermia and frostbites
During your regular walk you came across a man lying in the snow. There is an empty alcohol bottle next to him. You decide to approach him, you speak to him, but he does not react, not even when you shake him. You turn him on his back and you notice that he is breathing when you tilt his head back. His skin is cold, but he is not shivering.

What are you going to do?
We warm the man by friction and passive movements of his limbs, we may put something warm on his chest to speed up the warming. If it doesn’t work, we take his clothes off as well as ours, warm him body-to-body and call an ambulance.
We put him into the recovery position, try to isolate him from the surroundings e.g. using his jacket, a blanket or an aluminium foil from the car first aid kit. Also, we call an ambulance and monitor his breathing until it's arrival.
We turned the man on his back but from now on we try to manipulate with him carefully, as little as possible, and isolate him from outside. We call the ambulance and we maintain an open airway and regularly monitor basic vital signs until their arrival.
We will sit him down, take off his wet clothes and put on something dry. We should also give him a hot sweet beverage without caffeine or alcohol and call the ambulance, thus ensuring his quick transport to the hospital.
